Chapel of the Bells Wedding Chapel Chapel Review Tacky, Shady, Ripoff 12/25/07, User: mphightower Chapel Quality Rating: 1 Chapel Quality Description: very tacky people Service Rating: 1 Service Description: These people ripped me off $80 for canceling my wedding reservation with them after they tried to charge me hidden fees: $20 for filing my marriage certificate and $29.70 as a "Service Fee". First of all, the Nevada Law requires the Officiant to file the certificate. If there is an extra fee charged for this, it should be listed on their website. Second, nowhere on their website is a "Service Fee" mentioned except on their most expensive package, Package IV, which we did not even look at, as we wanted an inexpensive service. When someone from the Chapel called to verify the spelling of my name (so they could charge my credit card) I insisted on knowing the total charges. The caller refused to help me, saying I had to call back later to get that information. I called back and finally was told the true total, $49.70 more that I had previously been quoted. I was upset and tried to cancel, but was told there was an $80 cancelation fee, even though the girl on the phone assured me, when I first called, that there was no problem changing or canceling, and not to worry about giving her my credit card number. I should have been very worried. They offered to "knock off" the filing fee, saying, "we really don't need the filing fee", and this made me very nervous, because it felt like I was dealing with some pretty shady people if they tried to charge me an unnecessary fee and then knock it off after I complained. Why did they try to charge me the fee in the first place if they didn't need it? When I called back the next day to confirm my cancelation, the owner explained that all businesses try to get extra fees when they can, "just look at car dealers, for example", he said, as if that justified his business trying to add on additional fees. When I complained about his other fee, the "Service fee" which is only listed on his most expensive package on his website, which we did not even look at, he stated that I should have been more careful and read the entire website to make sure I understood the fees. He said that all he had to do to be able to charge that fee was to have it "somewhere on the website" and he had grounds to charge it. I told him I would be disputing his $80 cancelation fee, at which point he offered to take 50% off the entire package, "just to make me happy". If I had been talking about a piece of furniture, I might have taken his offer, but it was my wedding ceremony and I felt that even if I had to pay the stupid $80 cancelation fee, it would be better than letting that jerk perform my marriage.
